Position Overview: This is the perfect job for someone who strives to make meaningful and direct impacts in the community through the use of their natural organization, leadership and relationship building skills. You will be an advocate for the role of the arts and artists in building collaborative, supportive and inclusive communities. This position is focused on connecting the cultural sector through granting, outreach, support, education and partnerships. The position is responsible for the provision of support to external community event applicants and film production groups with an eye to building capacity within groups, as well as the oversite of the Arts and Events’ volunteer program. We are interested in a candidate that has experience working in multicultural and indigenous relationship building working towards right relations. You will have the opportunity to develop your strong communication and relationship-building skills in this diverse position as you liaise with many talented people inside and outside the organization to ensure an efficient and effective cultural programming. Strong organizational skills are required with the ability to meet deadlines and changing priorities. Further knowledge of community events, cultural activities, initiatives, and resources in the Bow Valley will help you to be successful in this role!
Core Accountabilities:
Sector Support
Contribute to a sustainable and resilient arts and culture sector by:
- Providing outreach and support to the cultural community.
- Building business acumen through training, mentorship, professional development, and workshops
- Cultivating mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships within the community to benefit the growth of the cultural sector
- Support the growth of the creative industry through business development initiatives
Leadership
- Act as a steward for Cultural Master Plan by aligning programs and projects with the goals outlined in the plan
- Ensure programs and projects are in line with the objectives and strategic outcomes of the relevant Town of Canmore policies, plans, guidelines and department strategic objectives and initiatives such as the Community Event Policy and the Public Art Policy
- Oversee budgets including purchasing, ordering of goods and services in line with Council’s purchasing policy and procedures
- Contractor/consultant management including recruiting (RFQ, RFPs as required), contract writing and negotiations, hiring and oversight
- Develop and maintain internal and external relationships
- Develop partnerships with community, cultural organizations, and private enterprise to establish and implement dynamic and creative programs
- Demonstrate a willingness and commitment to learning over time for personal capacity building, improved service delivery and organizational efficiency
- Behave in alignment with Town of Canmore values and workplace policies
- Act as an ambassador by promoting a positive, professional image of the Town of Canmore at all times
Job Knowledge
Event Permitting & Administration
- Support the full cycle of event permitting including inquiries, bookings, contract development, debrief and invoicing
- Conduct detailed review of all community event applications and permitting to ensure that application requirements are met, providing client support and feedback
- Liaise with Town departments, government agencies, volunteers, public utilities, consultants, and contractors with goal to coordinate the operational details of bookings to produce quality programs and events
- Send out a call for event applications twice annually and collate applications for presentation to and evaluation by the Community Event Committee
- Review and recommend updates to Events Permitting application process
Education
Identify innovative programming to build the capacity of creatives in Canmore by:
- Creating learning opportunities that offer critical engagement and push the boundaries of traditional art
- Offer educational opportunities that prepare Canmore artists to submit their work to galleries for consideration and give them the tools to apply for commissions and grants
- Research, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate on-site and virtual educational programming for artists, arts organizations, and the creative sector
- Conduct logistical planning and coordination with course/workshop facilitators, participants, and other points-of-contact to implement and perform on-site and virtual presentations
Event Support
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of department programs and events
- Oversee the successful operation of the Mountain Market and participate in the evaluation and selection of market vendors during selection processes
Grants/Bursary
- Development, implementation, and provide oversite of the micro grant program
- Oversite of the Lamphouse Endowment Fund Emerging Artist Bursary
- Identify and research grants available in support of the cultural sector
Outreach
- Develop and distribute the monthly Cultural Newsletter
- Identify knowledge and experience gaps in the sector through research and inquiry
- Understand the barriers to learning and accessing offered services
- Work with the Communications to develop and implement individual marketing strategies for programs and activities including social media, print media, and radio
Education & Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in arts administration, cultural planning, community development or festival and event management, or a related discipline pertinent to job functions combined with three years relevant sector experience in positions of similar responsibility
- Class 5 driver’s license
Experience:
- Experience in program development, program improvement and operational management specific to the cultural, festival, and event sectors – required
- Proven organizational skills, detail orientation, ability to meet deadlines and adapt to constantly changing priorities – required
- Successful track record in building sector competency through granting, education, and mentorship programs - required
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and collaboratively with business, cultural sector, festival, and event sector, community stakeholders, peers, and the general public – required
- Demonstrated ability to integrate access, equity and diversity approaches into program planning and content development - required
- Experience working in or with municipalities - an asset
- Broad knowledge of regulatory framework under with festivals and events are delivered – an asset
- Strong working knowledge of process and performance measures and methodologies – an asset
- Knowledge of community events, arts, cultural activities, and resources in the Bow Valley- an asset
- Strong computer skills. Must possess thorough knowledge of the current suite of Microsoft productivity tools, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook – required.
- Knowledge of Share Point – an asset
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
Salary & Benefits:
- Pay Range - $35.86 to $40.08 per hour. Compensation will be calculated based on the successful candidate’s related work experience and education
