Parks Worker - FT Seasonal

Position Overview:
The position of Parks Worker requires the incumbent to perform manual labour as directed by the Supervisor of Parks and Parks Team Leaders to maintain parks assets that include small equipment and hand tools, trails, turf, horticulture, irrigation, washrooms, benches, playgrounds, green spaces, mountain bike skills park, disc golf course, dog parks, invasive plants, hazardous trees, special events and the Cemetery. Working independently and cooperatively in teams, working safety and participating in the H&S program, along with performing emergency response are key components of this diverse role. Selected individuals may be promoted to Parks Worker Crew Leader to assist by training seasonal staff, leading small field teams to complete work and monitor staff moral and performance on the job.
Core Accountabilities:
- Assist the Parks Team leaders with business areas tasks such as: The inspection and maintenance of small equipment, irrigation, playgrounds, trails, mountain bike parks, skate park, washrooms, tennis courts, boarded rinks, dog parks, washrooms, disc golf, amenities (picnic table, kiosks, benches, fences, signs, gazebo’s, boardwalks, steps). Turf cultural programs (inspections, mowing, fertilizing, topdressing, sodding, seeding, watering, aerating), tree and shrub care (inspections, installations, removals, pruning, fertilizing and watering), invasive plant control (GPS tracking, inspections, performing control)
- Perform cemetery operations (inspections, mowing, hand or equipment digging and back filling, snow removal and ice control)
- Perform the safe operation of equipment (i.e. half / one ton truck, mowers, tractors, weed whips, pumps, blowers, hedge trimmer, brush saw, pole saw, etc. and larger equipment when authorized skid steer, toolcat, utility vehicle)
- Perform the safe operations of hand tools, hammers, screwdriver, ratchet, wrenches, files, shovels, rakes, pick, axe, tampers, edger’s, etc.
- Perform holiday lighting installation and removal
- Participate in, and perform the set up and tear down of all Town sponsored Special Events
- Assist the Parks Team Leaders with providing safety, small equipment and task training to other staff when approved
- Assist with snow removal from trails and plazas, and building and maintenance winter ice rinks
- Assist with Emergency Response as directed (crowd control, sand bagging, barricading areas, monitoring water levels, etc.)
- All individuals will be required to drive ½ - 3/4-ton trucks (short and long box). Selected individuals will drive vehicles / equipment such as:

- Skid steers, Tool cat, Tractor
- One-ton trucks (short and long box)
- Ride on mowers
- Utility Vehicles
- Selected individuals may be promoted to provide assistance to the Parks Team Leaders by:

- Leading smaller teams (up to 7 people) with infield work, monitor and report on team function, morale, and productivity.
- Acting as mentors to returning or new seasonal staff members
- Directly assist Team Leads with business area tasks like inspections and irrigation work.
Education & Qualifications:
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license – Required
- Completion of Secondary School Diploma – Asset
Experience:
- Physically fit - able to lift heavy loads (50lbs) and work on uneven terrain - Required
- Experience providing exceptional customer service – Required
- Ability to refrain from using a personal cellular phone, iPod or other electronic devices while on shift - Required
- Basic knowledge of landscape practices and lawn care maintenance – Asset, but not a requirement
- Ability to operate various grounds maintenance equipment – Asset, but not a requirement
- Capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions
Salary & Benefits:
- Pay Range- $22.53 per hour

Work Schedule: This is a temporary seasonal position, working 40 hours/week, generally over 5 days. Start dates are available for April 1st or May 6th. Shift, weekend, statutory holiday (July 1st), and emergency response work shall be required as needed. Unpaid vacation during the term maybe approved pending length of service as: 4 months – 5 days, 5 months – 6 days, 6 month – 7 days, 7 months – 8 days.
