Position Conditions: This is a full-time, permanent position of 40 hours per week. This position will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69.

Rate of Pay: $25.38 - $26.99 per hour (2023 Rate)

Closing Date: 11:59pm on March 13, 2025

This competition will include testing and an interview.

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Performs, and may direct assigned workers on all aspects of greenspace landscaping. This Trades Worker provides expertise in landscaping, landscape job restoration and landscape design as well as grounds keeping and seasonal and storm clean-up.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs and may direct assigned workers engaged in: landscaping activities including the installation of landscaping materials such as fill material, soil, seed and or sod. Responsible for assisting with planter and hanging basket placement. Assist with spring and fall tree planting.
  • Designs or assist in the City owned greenspaces landscaping jobs and restoration projects.
  • Operates equipment and machinery including, loader, sand pro, small tractor with attachments and roto-tiller.
  • Participates in establishing and meets deadlines for landscaping restoration projects.
  • Participates in ordering soil, seed, sod and other landscaping materials and maintains required inventory.
  • Maintains records of soil, seed, sod and other landscaping materials.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Assists in tree clean up and tree pruning as required.
  • Assists in winter snow removal and summer storm clean-up.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12, G.E.D. , C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma;
  • Required to attain Pesticide Applicators certification and any other certifications as required by legislation; core, greenhouse, mosquito and landscape golf course (can be obtained within 2 years)
  • Obtain Integrated Pest Management Certification (can be obtained within 2 years);
  • Hold and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 3 with Air Drivers License;
  • Successful completion of a Child Abuse Registry Check and Criminal Reference Check, including Vulnerable Sector Verification;
  • Any other certifications as required by legislation.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of two (2) years comprehensive experience in landscaping and restoration projects

 

WORK CONDITIONS

The Landscaping Trades Worker works independently and in a team environment.

 

  • Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily);
  • Self-motivated and quality driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals (daily);
  • Necessary to work in all types of weather conditions (daily);
  • Works in equipment at various heights (frequently);
  • Works in areas of confined space, unpleasant noise levels, and adverse odours (occasionally);
  • Available for overtime and call outs (occasionally);
  • May be required to perform weekend and evening shifts (occasionally);
  • Responsible to the Chargehand – Forestry & Horticulture.
