POSITION:                 Payroll & People Services Assistant

STATUS:                    Permanent; Full-Time

SHIFT:                        Monday to Friday - 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

LOCATION:                Provincial Office - Vancouver, BC - Hybrid (2 days required in the office)

CLASSIFICATION:    Exempt

Join our people-focused team in a dynamic non-profit organization that makes a difference for animals in the province of BC!  This position reports to the Chief People Officer and is primarily responsible for assisting with the processing of payroll and benefits for our staff of around 600 unionized and non-unionized people.  You will be part of a larger, bustling team that also performs important human resources, volunteer resources, and training and development functions as well as various other exciting organizational support duties including strategic planning and equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.

 

You will ensure the organization is supporting the people who do the work to support the animals.  Your work is grounded in payroll best practices and legal/collective agreement compliance, and based on organizational current and future needs.

This position will be part of our Provincial Office team based in Vancouver, but qualifies for a hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of two (2) days/week in the office.  We are happy to mentor and train the candidate with the right qualities and willingness to learn.

 

Some specific duties:

 

            Payroll & Benefits Administration:

  • Assisting users with Dayforce login difficulties, password resets, and troubleshooting as required.
  • Assisting with the distribution, collection, and processing of new hire paperwork, change forms, and termination paperwork.
  • Entering/tracking/checking employee and payroll information in Dayforce.
  • Processing parts of payroll on a regular basis and processing the full payroll in the absence of the Payroll & Benefits Specialist.
  • Creating and maintaining employee files.
  • Creating, distributing, and processing benefits forms; setting up, changing, and terminating employees on group benefits plans as required.
  • Updating seniority lists.
  • Providing payroll information related to WorkSafe BC claims.

 

People Services Support:

  • Preparing long service recognition cards for signature and distributing once signed.
  • Monitoring and responding to enquiries submitted to the LMS Support email in the absence of the Training & Development Specialist.
  • Assisting with exit interview administration.
  • Assisting with internal and external surveys such as compensation surveys.
  • Assisting with research to inform people policy development and providing project support, as required.
  • Assisting with upkeep of assigned People Services sections of our internal Staff Portal.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications you need to have:

  • Completion of post-secondary training in payroll and/or Human Resources, plus 1-2 years’ related experience in a large, complex organization; or an equivalent combination of qualifications acceptable to the employer.  Related experience includes but is not limited to:
    • payroll;
    • working with HR information systems; and
    • working in a unionized environment.
  • Experience with Ceridian Dayforce HCM specifically is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Employment Standards, the Human Rights Act, BC Labour Code, privacy legislation, and other applicable legislation related to human resources and labour relations.
  • Strong computer skills; high proficiency with Microsoft Office particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Superior attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of professionalism and discretion with confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and complete tasks/projects within tight timelines.
  • Positive attitude along with excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to relate respectfully to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting.
  • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA mission, vision, values and strategic directions.
