Audio Visual Technician

Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is looking for an Audio Visual Technician to provide technical education and support to students, staff, and faculty with respect to department equipment operation and care.

This is a full-time position starting as soon as possible. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day. Hours include frequent evening shifts until 8pm and occasional weekend support.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, IT Services, this position operates the reservation and distribution systems for audiovisual equipment and supplies around campus. This role provides set-up, demos and ad hoc assistance and performs preventative maintenance and minor repair.
As a member of the audio visual support team this role contributes to procurement, installation, update and general maintenance of presentation and interactive audiovisual equipment around campus.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Reservation & Distribution
- Operate the reservation and distribution system for provision of audio and video equipment
- Review requests, prepare spaces and equipment for loan
- Provide ad hoc support during distribution in the classroom or area as needed
- Track and collect returned equipment, issue notification for late equipment and verify return
Presentation Support
- Assist students, faculty and staff with audio and video classroom, event, or meeting room setup for both physical and virtual presentation
- Assist students and gallery staff with audio and video set-up for crits, shows, galleries including demo set-up
- Demonstrate safe installation and use techniques to students for future use of similar equipment
- Provide information regarding the capabilities for different equipment available
- Provide and explain user instructions for all audio and video equipment
Inventory Maintenance and Support
- Review equipment inventory, condition, and flag maintenance issues for repair or e-cycling
- Perform regular preventative maintenance on equipment
- Investigate and perform minor repairs on equipment (cleaning speakers, inspecting wiring)
- Arrange external repair of major issues or replacement and maintain positive relationships with external vendors
- Assist management with recommendations on appropriate audio and video equipment to meet the university’s evolving presentation needs
- Contribute towards the development and maintenance of internal controls and processes
- Develop/maintain proper training documentation, and cross train with other team members to provide continuity and vacation coverage
- Provide support on audio visual reporting and related projects
Qualifications:
The following qualifications have been determined to promote likelihood of
success in the role. In alignment with the principles of inclusion, individuals with an alternative equivalent qualification may be considered.
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years of experience as an audiovisual technician
- Demonstrated expertise operating audio and video equipment, including but not limited to, audio recorders CD/DVD players, digital cameras, microphones, projectors, single board computers (i.e. Raspberry Pi), speakers, sound systems and TVs
- Demonstrated experience operating digital presentation technologies using software on computers, laptops, and tablets
- Demonstrated experience in operating a variety of audio and video equipment on multiple hardware and software platforms
- Must be able to lift 50lbs (23kg) and work in a variety of physical positions including reaching overhead, on ladders and in confined spaces utilizing safe work practices
- Formal training in audiovisual equipment operation and maintenance is an asset
- Relevant experience working in a post-secondary or public institution is an asset
- Working knowledge of recording and streaming live audio and video content is an asset
- Operating presentation platforms such as Teams or Zoom is an asset

As a member of the AUPE bargaining unit (Local 071/006), this full-time permanent position falls under a Classification 5 (Five) with the annual salary range established to be $52,680 - $58,406 dependent upon skills, education and experience.
