About the role
On-site | Full-time
The Health, Safety and Environment Coordinator will work closely with the National HSE Manager, as well as, location managers to fulfill all health, safety, and environmental functions in Winnipeg. This will include incident prevention, investigation, reporting and follow-up, employee training, HSE record review, and compliance with other components of the safety programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with National Health and Safety Manager and location manager to implement all ALS health and safety programs in ALS Winnipeg;
- Co-chair the Joint Health Safety and Environment Committee meetings and associated audits;
- Provide orientation and ongoing Health and Safety training for staff;
- Coordinate HSE training programs for all employees (WHMIS, TDG, First Aid, etc.)
- Ensure adequate First Aid management including supplies, reporting, resources, and scheduling;
- Perform incident management including investigation, reporting, and follow up;
- Co-operate with Injury Management personnel as necessary;
- Follow up on monthly site safety inspections and actions;
- Recommend corrective and preventative safety measures and appropriate safety equipment and materials to local management;
- Lead risk analysis and hazard identification processes for both safety and the environment;
- Coordinate and maintain contractor management induction, insurance, and documentation;
- Maintain and update SDS records stored on-site;
- Maintain emergency response procedures including scheduling drills and inspections;
- Write procedures, policies, and educational material for the local safety program;
- Assist National Safety Manager in review and creation of policies and procedures as assigned;
- Conduct exposure monitoring programs and employee fit tests;
- Notify and coordinate hazardous sample receipt and analysis with laboratory, safety team, and contractors and disposal as required;
- Use correct protocols as defined in authorized procedures and schedules;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
About you:
- Excellent English communication skills are mandatory (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
- Strong organizational and leadership skills;
- Ability to speak in public and effectively present information to groups;
- Proven time management skills, including handling escalations and time-critical issues;
- A careful and meticulous worker;
- Able to work independently and as part of a team;
- Able to stay current in an ever-changing environment;
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with competent computer skills;
Required Qualifications:
- Technical Diploma or Degree in Chemistry, or related discipline;
- Minimum of 1-year experience in a Laboratory environment is preferred;
- Valid unrestricted license for personal vehicle use applicable in the province/territory;
- No major driving violations and no more than two minor violations/incidents
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
- Ability to complete a full shift with a combination of sitting, standing, and occasional walking, including periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, etc. when required;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
- Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and may require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
