Food Bank Coordinator (Work Learn)
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Description
The AMS Services’ main mandate to offer services and resources to the membership which are in significant demand and aim to further the well-being of the membership as a whole.
Each of these Services are run by a Coordinator, and in some instances, with the help of Assistant Coordinator(s).
Each of the Coordinators will be overseen on a daily basis by the Senior Manager, Student Services, a full-time, permanent, non-student role.
The AMS Food Bank provides a free emergency supply of food for any student with a valid UBC card. The Food Bank runs a number of food drives and events during the year to raise awareness about food security issues within the community.
The Food Bank Coordinator manages and oversees all aspects of the AMS Food Bank, in close collaboration with the Senior Manager, Student Services.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that the Food Bank is generally operating within the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful Service
- Expand and maintain on and off campus partnerships, especially with larger donors who host large-scale campus events, to increase and ensure regular donations to the Food Bank
- Recruit, train, supervise, and schedule volunteers
- Keep up-to-date with other means of relevant support on and off campus (ex. UBC Food Hub, Sprouts, UBC Farm, Meal Share)
- Research other means of support for clients such as other relevant services on and off campus, and information regarding nutrition and economical food preparation
- Ensure that the Food Bank is clean and tidy at all times and food is stored according to BC Health and Safety regulations
- Organize a volunteer appreciation program
- Organize fundraisers or food drives each semester, as required
- Work closely with the Senior Manager, Student Services in developing successful outreach initiatives to advertise and promote the Service
- Post and attend regular office hours
- Attend regular AMS Services team meetings
- Attend weekly 1-on-1 meetings with the Senior Manager, Student Services
- Attend weekly 1-on-1 meetings with Food Bank Assistant Coordinators
- Coordinate and chair weekly Food Bank team meetings.
- Develop and maintain a Service Operations Manual
- Manage the finances of the service
- Gather statistics regarding utilization of the Service, and prepare a series of reports including: monthly usage reports to the Student Services Manager, a year-end report to Student Council/AMS Executive, the UBC President’s Office and a transition package (manual, report and position timeline) for the next Food Bank Coordinator
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - Ability to collaborate and work in a team environment as well as independently, and delegate tasks to volunteers
- Knowledge of issues surrounding food insecurity and social justice an asset
- Experience with budgeting, scheduling and administrative tasks
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel
- Experience in hiring staff or volunteers
- Class 5 driver’s license required for donation pick ups
- Sensitivity to others’ situations
Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student at UBC Vancouver, eligible for the Work Learn program.
Experience Level: Current Students in an Undergraduate Program, Current Students in a Masters Program, Current Students in a Phd Program
