The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title:          2nd Cook

Department:           Food & Beverage

Reports to:             Chef de Cuisine  

Employee status:   Full time, Permanent, Hourly

Hours per week:     up to 37.5    
Compensation:       $20.50 per hour, plus gratuities & benefits (health and dental plan after 3-months)

Position Overview 

The 2nd Cook is responsible for the day to day kitchen operation including but not limited to preparing and executing menus according to the AMS recipes. The 2nd Cook will provide the highest quality and presentation of the food, helps in proving a safe and healthy work environment by following AMS Health & Safety. They are a leader by example, ensuring that the team members adhere to AMS standards at all times.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhering to all AMS policies and procedures as well as other entity regulations such as Food Safe, etc.
  • Works closely with the Kitchen manager to ensure the quality and presentation of the food, promotes a safe and healthy work environment by following AMS Health & Safety, and WorkSafeBC standards
  • Preparing goods as needed to meet the expected business volumes
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the kitchen to the highest standards
  • Engage in cleaning duties such as, but not limited to, dishwashing and floor mopping
  • Executing orders in a timely manner to meet or exceed guest expectations in accordance to AMS standards
  • Following AMS recipes and reducing food waste
  • Ensuring ongoing safe operation of appliances, equipment and tools (WHMIS)
  • Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Inventory control
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Culinary diploma or equivalent restaurant/cooking experience is required
  • Banquet and Bulk Cooking Experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years kitchen experience in a fast paced environment.
  • Experienced professional knife skills are required
  • Minimum Food Safe level 1 certification or higher is an asset
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multitasking environment with little supervision
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kgs (50 lb)
  • Ability to do shift work daytime, evening and weekends
  • Good oral and written English communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong time management skills
