The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title:              Bartender

Department:                Food & Beverage

Reports to:                  Outlet Manager

Supervises:                 Outlet Staff

Employee status:        Temporary, part-time until April 30, 2025

Hours per week:          Varies

Compensation:             $17.50 per hour

 

Position Purpose:

The Bartender is responsible for the superior and timely guest service and beverage quality at the Pit Pub. The ideal candidate has an outgoing, friendly personality and enjoys interacting with people while being hands on. Additionally, the candidate must take initiative in taking steps to make sure the bar is clean, operating efficiently and promoted well.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring safe liquor service and compliance according to legal requirements and AMS standards and procedures
  • Achieving sales goals through ongoing upselling, giving recommendations to guests and ensuring timely service according to AMS standards and guidelines
  • Providing excellent guest service according to AMS standards and procedures
  • Handling cash transactions and staying focused and levelheaded under pressure
  • Applying proper accounting principles to balance the till at the end of the shift
  • Reducing waste and spillage by following AMS procedures, recipes and guidelines
  • Demonstrating excellent in depth knowledge about products, AMS services and businesses, the venue and other services within the building and on campus
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Demonstrating excellent grooming and uniform standards according to AMS procedures
  • Clearing and cleaning tables throughout shift and putting debris in the appropriate area (garbage, recycling, glass washer, etc.)
  • Ensuring all cabinets, coolers, pub doors and office safe are locked at the end of the night
  • Completing the open/close checklist before signing out
  • Assessing, ordering and receiving inventory to maintain appropriate level of product stock
  • Report operational problems and maintenance issues to the manager
  • Keeping informed of upcoming events and promotions
  • Providing information to the public regarding all aspects of the bar`s operations
  • Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of bartending experience in a high volume bar environment
  • Ability to do shift work (daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays)
  • POS experience required (preferably Squirrel)
  • Serving-It-Right Certification required
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally & written
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 60kgs (132lbs)
  • Ability to learn quickly, build relationships and work in a team-based environment
  • Food Safe Level 1 or higher an asset
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment remaining calm under pressure
  • Basic Security Training (BST) certification an asset
