Referendum Coordinator
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Referendum Coordinator
Reports to: Strategy and Governance Lead
Supervises: Referendum Campaign Team Volunteers
Employee Status: Term, Appointed
Term: January 1 – March 7, 2025 (with potential for extension)
Hours per week: 10 hours per week from January 1 to January 31; 20 hours per week from February 1 to March 7
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Referendum Coordinator is responsible for organizing and executing a successful “Yes” campaign for the AMS Council. This means creating a strong outreach strategy that will push students to vote in favour of referendums that the AMS Council wants to pass. In addition, the Referendum Coordinator will be responsible for managing a team of volunteers that will assist with running the on-the-ground campaign work.
This position is best suited to a candidate with significant self-motivation, an interest in campaigning and outreach, and a go-getter attitude that is willing to approach anyone. This candidate will work closely with the Executives and the Communications & Marketing department in crafting a campaign that students will feel excited about voting for.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create an effective and attractive “Yes” campaign in tandem with the Communications & Marketing department.
- Hire and manage a staff of volunteers who will run events for the campaign.
- Engage with the campus community in conversation about the positive aspects of the referendum.
- Ensure distribution of lawn signs and other promotional materials.
- Develop and executive a social media and online presence.
- Create events and promotions to encourage students to vote.
- Do announcements in classrooms and other settings to encourage students to vote.
- Coordinate and attend meetings between the AMS Council, the Executive, and members of the UBC Community.
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
- Cannot be a candidate in the General Election
- Must not hold any other elected, staff, or appointed position in the AMS.
- Interest in promotions, marketing, and campaigns.
- An exciting and motivated attitude, and a willingness to talk to anyone within the UBC Community.
