WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Engineer, Structural provides in-house design services supporting other Calgary and Springbank Airport departments in the fields of structural engineering. This role completes design activities to support the airfield, groundside, or terminal building which include, feasibility and preliminary design, design package preparation, cost estimating for proposed new and tenant development projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Identify and recommend appropriate structural systems considering facility usage, building codes, design requirements, and economic factors.
  • Prepare reports, cost estimates, and proposals, coordinating with internal stakeholders to meet company objectives.
  • Perform detailed design calculations, prepare CADD drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for tenders, and manage post-construction documentation.
  • Approve civil and structural shop drawings, system controls, and layouts during construction, conducting site inspections and acceptance tests.
  • Resolve on-site construction problems with contractors and provide technical assistance for evaluating and improving existing structural systems.
  • Develop and coordinate structural design standards, ensuring reliability, safety, and compliance with codes and organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with external consultants, reviewing and approving their submissions to ensure adherence to regulations and standards.
  • Provide technical advice to contractors and consultants, ensuring work conforms to codes and departmental standards.
  • Support tenant development projects by reviewing and approving Capital Improvement Projects, attending meetings, and conducting inspections.
  • Oversee structural components such as coring, roof maintenance, and repair programs, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with standards.
  • Manage preventive maintenance programs for structural systems, including roof and roofing system replacements, repairs, and related initiatives.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering or a related field.
  • 6-8 years of experience in structural engineering design and project management preferably in a large-scale facility with complex structural building systems.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation.
  • Strong knowledge of national and local building codes and legislation.
  • Ability to design structural for all building systems, including design calculations and cost estimating.
  • Ability to complete CADD drawings and specifications.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural engineering concepts, construction methods, and approaches including roofing systems, building systems, pre and post-tensioned concrete systems, etc.  

WHAT ELSE

  • Ability to communicate effectively and advise team members, contractors, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to others.
  • Experience working with contractors, tenants, and other external stakeholders is an asset.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of a Safety Sensitive position, this includes pre-employment medical assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing
