WHAT YOU WILL DO

This role requires a combination of financial expertise, project management skills, and strategic thinking to effectively control costs and optimize financial performance for significant projects at the Calgary Airport Authority, including the West Runway Rehabilitation and Concourse B projects. The Assistant Controller, Project Cost Control plays a critical role in ensuring that costs are accurately tracked and reported for these projects and are delivered within budgetary constraints while meeting quality standards and stakeholder expectations.

The Assistant Controller, Project Cost Control is responsible for project cost management and collecting, reviewing, and reporting on detailed project costs. This involves examining vendor invoices, accounting records, preparing financial statements, analysing cost reports, and reviewing internal control procedures. Other duties include periodic budget review of construction and other contracts and developing progress and cost reports.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Responsible to control and monitor project total expenditure including verifying and checking of invoices and claims from suppliers, vendors and subcontractors to ensure that all project expenditures are accurate, captured and properly recorded.
  • Calculate and map out the costs of the number of workers, materials, machinery and IT infrastructure needed during the entire duration of the project.
  • Analyze invoices to ensure correct products/services were received at the expected cost as per contract.
  • Analyze processes and procedures to identify cost savings opportunities and process improvements.
  • Provide planning and cost controlling support for all projects which includes variation reporting, monitoring of milestone progress to the preparation of customer billing processes, etc.
  • Review project activity scheduling and monitoring cost and Billing Activities.
  • Ensure effective project implementation and utilize productive reports from the creation of work breakdown structure (WBS) with the use of project management system to monitor the status of all purchases, invoicing and delivery up to the closure of the project.
  • Coordinate and work with the project management team to resolve project issues to ensure the delivery/completion of the project work.
  • Perform project costing related reporting to the team and management’s review on a monthly basis to ensure that expenditures are kept within the project budget.
  • Provide cost control and planning advice to the internal Departments as and when required.
  • Perform and manage project financial activity monitoring purchase requests and follow up.
  • Perform commercial review for vendor quotations for the preparation of service agreements.
  • Coordinate and work with the business units and supply chain management team to resolve project issues to ensure the delivery/completion of the project work.
  • Provide critical assessment of all budgets and cost projections.
  • Assess all incoming products, resources, and services to ensure the best price.
  • Remain acutely aware of market trends that could impact resource costs.
  • Keep up to date on new vendors and possible cost-cutting partnerships.
  • Collaborate with Project Manager to strategize ways to minimize waste.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree is considered an asset.
  • Proven experience in project cost control, financial management, or related field, with a minimum of 7 years of experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and make informed decisions.
  • Highly skilled in auditing and strong experience validating costs and charges against contractual arrangements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex financial concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management tools, Microsoft Office Suite and Oracle ERP.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, accounting standards, and industry best practices related to project cost management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a strong commitment to meeting deadlines and delivering results.
  • Strong background in, budgeting, and internal controls.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues, analyze data, and make informed decisions.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all financial activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with team members, management, and external stakeholders.
  • Capability to address and resolve financial discrepancies and operational challenges.
