Public Works Summer Student

Environmental Services

4 Month Term approx. April 28, 2025 up to August 29, 2025

The Environmental Services Department manages assets worth almost one billion dollars that provide the critical infrastructure to keep St. Thomas moving. Our diverse department oversees the water and sewer systems, pollution control, road network, engineering design and construction, parking, solid waste management, development, by-law enforcement, public transit, animal control, and fleet. With a focus on developing in-house expertise we strive to implement sustainable solutions. We are looking for summer students who are efficient, creative, willing to take on new challenges, and provide great customer service.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a University or College program that directly relates to the job functions.  Programs could include but are not restricted to:  Engineering, Geographical Information Systems, Database Administrator, and Computer Science.  
  • Qualified applicants must have attended the previous school year full time and will be returning to the next school term full time.  Proof MAY be required.
  • Candidates should have strong computer skills related to Microsoft Excel and database software.  
  • Knowledge of GIS is an asset. 
  •  


Public Works Service Area – 1 Position (37.5 hrs/week)


Provide support for the Computerized Maintenance Management System. This system supports the day to day operations of the department and the City’s asset and work management program.  Duties will include:

  • updating records
  • generating reports
  • archiving records
  • assisting with inventory control and procurement
  • Provide customer service which may include answering telephone based and in person inquiries, scheduling appointments, and completing forms and providing water meters

 

2024 Rate: $24.98 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, working 37.5 hours per week. This is a CUPE Local 841 union position.

 

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Criminal Record Searches will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older.  Those selected for re-hire will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
