Aquatic Attendants – Jaycees Pool

Parks, Recreation and Property Management

The City hires qualified summer staff to work at the municipal outdoor pool for the summer season (mid June until the end of August).

 

Reporting to the Aquatic Supervisor or designate, the Aquatic Attendant is responsible for ensuring safety of pool participants by promoting water safety, enforcing pool rules and monitoring crowds. When required, the Aquatic Attendant also assists with the facilitation of the Aquatic Admission Standards testing during swims. This position monitors and regulates the conduct of participants using pool amenities and is required to assist in emergency situations.  The Aquatic Attendant ensures equipment is set up and stored properly and that the pool area is kept safe and tidy. Overall, this position is responsible for maintaining a safe and and enjoyable environment for pool users. Note: This position is never in the facility alone nor are they solely responsible for the safety of participants.

 

The Aquatic Attendant will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs.  In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

 

Description

 

Program Support (75%)

  • Performs daily maintenance of the aquatic facility (ie. garbage collection, locker rooms, washrooms, public area, equipment, etc.).
  • Ensures equipment is used properly and stored in proper locations after use.
  • Completes all daily, weekly, monthly and any other checklists assigned by the Aquatic Supervisor or designate.
  • Assists Lifeguards in ensuring the safety of participants during testing and learn-to-swim programs.
  • Assists with the preparation of special events.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.

  

Health and Safety (15%)

  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the aquatic facilities.
  • Manually vacuums the pools and cleans the deck areas.
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations and City policies.
  • Must use or wear the required personal protective equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.
  • Reports to Supervisor, the absence or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger themselves or another worker.
  • Reports to Supervisor, any contravention of the Act, regulations or the existence of any hazard of which they are aware.

 

Customer Service and Communication (10%)

  • Interacts with patrons.
  • Provides a high level of front-line customer service including greeting and engaging participants.
  • Gives and provides information, redirects when required.
  • Clearly communicates pool rules to participants and is able to enforce in a courteous and tactful manner.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Current Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross
  • Standard First Aid and CPR, AED

 

Experience

  • Must be 15 years old as of June 1 of current year

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Must be able to swim as duties are performed around the pool.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • High degree of attention as the position requires monitoring the activities of a large number of participants in the pool.
  • Strong customer service and decision-making skills.
  • Contact is generally pleasant. Enforcing pool rules may result in situations that require diplomacy and tact.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C, AED required.
  • General knowledge of janitorial duties.

 

 

Other

  • Applicant will be responsible for their own transportation to and from program site(s). 

 

WORK TIME FRAME:

  • Available from late June until the end of August (working a varied schedule, including weekends)

 

Hourly Rate: $17.20 - $18.86 per hour (2024 Rates), plus 4% vacation pay.

 

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Criminal Record Searches will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older.  Those selected for re-hire will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
