Summer Camp Leaders

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Camp Leader is responsible for leading a high quality camp program and for appropriate supervision of camp participants.  This position also acts as a trusted liaison for parents and caregivers and is responsible for providing professional and courteous service.  The Camp Leader provides coordination of a range of day to day program activities and issues that require sound judgement and effective decision-making.

 

The Camp Leader will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs.  In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Program Support and Implementation (60%)

  • Supervises the activities, including travel, at a particular camp program location(s) within the camper/staff ratio to ensure the care, safety and security of participants.
  • Assists in planning and implements a varied recreational day camp program involving crafts, active and quiet games, sports and special events.
  • Organizes and assists with the set up and tear down of equipment each day ensuring that equipment and facilities are in safe working condition and report any concerns to the Supervisor.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, good communication, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Participates in special event booths promoting camp programs (i.e. Seniors Picnic, Canada Day, Teddy Bear Picnic) as required.
  • Assists in creating developmentally appropriate program plans.
  • Assists in planning and delivers a wide variety of activities incorporating inclusive programming that allows for children of all abilities to participate.
  • Is a role model of City values and inclusiveness through all interactions with campers, parents and co-workers including excellent service.
  • Ensures quality assurance in the delivery of all programming.
  • Encourages campers to achieve and set goals.
  • Maintains camp location(s), equipment and materials to ensure safety of the environment and activities. 
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.

 

Health and Safety (15%)

  • Maintains an inventory of program and first aid supplies, communicating supply needs to the Program Coordinator as required.
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the regulations and City policies.
  • Must use or wear the required personal protective equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.
  • Reports to Supervisor, the absence or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger themselves or another worker.
  • Reports to Supervisor, any contravention of the Act, regulations or the existence of any hazard of which they are aware.
  • Provides exceptional attention to Health and Safety and supervision of campers.
  • Responds to and/or assists with on-site emergencies, incidents and accidents, which may involve the provision of Standard First Aid, CPR and/or the completion of an accident/incident report when required.
  • Keeps camp areas sanitized and clean.

 

Customer Service and Communication (25%)

  • Maintains accurate and up to date daily written records of attendance, program activities and safety checks.
  • Provides formal and informal feedback to parents/caregivers of participants on a daily/regular basis.
  • Provides required documentation at the end of each camp week to the Camp Supervisor and/or the Program Coordinator.
  • Assists with the distribution of program correspondence to participants and or parents, as required.
  • Builds positive relationships with parents, campers and co-workers.
  • Responds to parent/camper concerns in a timely and professional manner and within the City’s expectations.
  • Actively engages with campers 100% of the time in program delivery.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Standard First Aid, CPR & AED Certification
  • Minimum one (1) year working with children
  • Strong oral & written communication skills.
  • Ability to think and interact effectively, tactfully, and courteously with campers, parents and other staff building a cooperative and collaborative working relationship.
  • Applicant will be responsible for their own transportation to and from program site(s).

 

WORK TIME FRAME: Approximately 8-9 weeks in 2025 (June, July and August).

 

Remuneration Range: $17.20 - $18.86 per hour (2024 Rates), plus 4% vacation.

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Criminal Record Searches will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older.  Those selected for re-hire will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
