Summer Junior Lifeguard

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs and the technical direction and guidance of the Aquatic Supervisor and the Program Coordinator, provides swimming instruction to program registrants and serves as lifeguard during public recreational swimming.

 

As part of the deck team, the Junior Lifeguard maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the aquatic facility and enforces high safety standards at all times.  The position assists in the smooth delivery of scheduled programs. Provides functional direction and guidance to Aquatic Attendants while maintaining open lines of communication with the Senior Lifeguard, other aquatic staff, patrons and supervisors. 

 

The Junior Lifeguard will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs.  In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Program Support and Implementation (65%)

  • Instructs all ages and levels of program registrants.
  • Supervises children and adults while lifeguarding during public swimming.
  • Participates in the maintenance of cleanliness and organization at the pool.
  • Participates and assists with the organization and running of special events and theme days.
  • Participates, as required, in departmental functions and activities.
  • Assists in delivering planned, well-balanced, effective programming adapting to abilities, learning styles and different mobility.
  • Acts as part of a team to ensure that aquatic staff are organized and prepared for programs.
  • Ensures protocols are followed and assist to maintain the cleanliness and disinfection of the aquatic facility, pool, change rooms, washrooms including spilled bodily fluids from accidents or injuries.
  • Assists in the deck supervision duties and ensuring that the facility is safe to open and remain open for patrons.
  • Always maintains a high standard of safety supervision.
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with City and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures as outlined.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.

 

Health and Safety (15%)

  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the regulations and City policies.
  • Must use or wear the required personal protective equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.
  • Reports to the Aquatic Supervisor, the absence or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger themselves or another worker.
  • Reports to the Aquatic Supervisor, the Program Coordinator and/or the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs any contravention of the Act, regulations or the existence of any hazard of which they are aware.
  • Remains alert and available to respond to any aquatic emergencies.
  • Continually monitors patron’s conduct for behavioral concerns, potential accidents and other potential hazards.
  • During an emergency, assists in ensuring the safety of all patrons and aquatic staff is a priority including emergency response, evacuations, and water rescue.
  • Ensures compliance with the Ontario public pools regulation. If the aquatic facility is not in compliance, the Senior Lifeguard is responsible for closing the facility and reporting to the Aquatic Supervisor.
  • Provides effective emergency response, executing proper rescue techniques and providing first aid within the scope of their training.  Liaison with appropriate Emergency Services Personnel (EMS, Police, Fire) to ensure effective transfer of care as dictated by the situation.

 

Customer Service and Communication (20%)

  • Shares and communicates water safety education.
  • Informs the Senior Lifeguard and/or Aquatic Supervisor of any emergencies or facility and patron concerns.
  • Ensures required daily documentation is completed (time sheets, accident/incident reports, open and close forms) as required.
  • Monitors and records all pool information in accordance with Ontario health regulations, WHMIS and City policy.
  • Completes all written accident/incident reports as required.
  • Positively interacts with patrons providing a high level of customer service including greeting and engaging participants.
  • Clearly communicates pool rules to participants and is able to gain compliance in a courteous and tactful manner.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Life Saving Society Instructors Certificate
  • LSS National Lifesaving Certification
  • Standard First Aid, CPR-C & AED Certification
  • Must be 16 years old as of June 1 of current year
  • Mature, reliable, confident and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and work well as part of a team.
  • Ability to supervise children of all ages.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Self motivated.
  • Maintain National Lifeguard physical standards:
  • A 50 metres head-up sprint swim in 60 seconds or faster
  • Swim 400 metres in 10 minutes or better
  • Swim 15 metres, surface dive to bottom of pool and retrieve a 20 lb. object, surface and carry the object 5 metres: all with 40 seconds or better
  • 15 metre head-up swim to contact a distressed swimmer, carry the victim 5 metres supporting the victim’s head and shoulders above the water
  • Submerge and swim 15 metres underwater
  • Swim 25 metres to recover a submerged victim, then carry the victim 25 metres: all within 90 seconds.
  • Satisfactory Police Record Check.
  • Applicant will be responsible for their own transportation to and from program site(s).

 

WORK TIME FRAME: Available from late June until the end of August (working a varied schedule, including weekends).

 

Please note: Successful applicants will be required to attend mandatory training during the month of June 2025.

 

Remuneration Range: $17.20 - $18.86 per hour (2024 Rates), plus 4% vacation.

 

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Criminal Record Searches will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older.  Those selected for re-hire will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
