Summer Camp Supervisor

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Under the general direction of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs and the technical direction of the Program Coordinator, be responsible for leading a high-quality summer camp program, providing children the opportunity to improve self-esteem, motor skills, social skills and creativity through a variety of arts and physical activities. Specifically, this position is responsible for program scheduling, development, delivery, staff support and training as well as customer service.  Overall, this position plays an integral role in the development and delivery of recreation camp programs at the City of St. Thomas.

 

The Camp Supervisor will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. 

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Program Support and Implementation (60%)

  • Assists in the development and recruitment of camp leaders.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of training programs, orientation and evaluations for new and returning camp leaders.
  • Plans, develops and implements day to day programming activities.
  • Supports camp leaders, and directly works with participants that require additional supports and 1-on-1 interactions.
  • Supervises the activities at program locations ensuring care, safety and security of participants and staff.
  • Assists in planning and responsible for implementing special event booths promoting camp programs (ie. Seniors Picnic, Canada Day, Teddy Bear Picnic) as required.
  • Schedules the appropriate staffing ratio required to operate camp programs, trips and/or special camp events.
  • Arranges for and schedules camp staff to assist with extended care services in the morning and evenings as required.
  • Visits the various camp locations to oversee camp programs and respond to various requests and/or concerns from camp staff and campers.
  • Monitors and maintains camp program registration/class lists and waitlists.
  • Provides advice, guidance and instruction to camp staff on the completion of tasks including responding to enquires and concerns.
  • Develops, coordinates and supports camp programs and special events.
  • Arranges camp logistics and modifies camp programs as required.
  • Assists in the acquisition of camp supplies to support programs and activities.
  • Encourages camp staff and participants to set and achieve goals.
  • Transports program supplies between camp locations.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.

 

Health and Safety (15%)

  • Organizes and assists with the set up and tear down of equipment each day ensuring that equipment and facilities are in safe working condition and report any concerns to Supervisor.
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the regulations and City policies.
  • Ensures all staff are wearing required personal protective equipment as per the City’s expectations.
  • Reports to Operational Staff, Program Coordinator and/or Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs, the absence or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger themselves or another worker.
  • Reports to Program Coordinator and/or Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs, any contravention of the Act. The regulations or the existence of any hazard of which they are aware.
  • Completes periodic program area scans to ensure adherence to safety policies and procedures.  Notifies Operational Staff, Programs Coordinator and/or Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs for deficiency resolution.

 

Customer Service and Administration (25%)

  • Tracks program expenses to ensure spending is within allocated budgets.
  • Maintains suitable amount of program supplies as required for the program, communicating program supply needs to the Program Coordinator and/or the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs as required.
  • Maintains accurate records on a regular basis for registrations, attendance, safety checks, accident/incident reports, program expenses and program evaluations.
  • Assists with the preparation of and is responsible for the distribution of program correspondence to participants/parents as required.
  • Communicates with parents/caregivers of participants on a daily/regular basis in person, by telephone, cell phone and email.
  • Facilitates and attends regular staff meetings as required.
  • Prepares camp leader evaluations (mid-season and at the end of season) and submits to Program Coordinator and/or the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs for review and approval.
  • Assists in the processing of camp registrations, refunds, withdrawals, additional charges and/or transfer of costs.  This includes tracking CAS enrollments.
  • Assists in the evaluation of participant applications for eligibility.  This may include developing accommodation plans.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in children’s camp environments or experience as deemed by the City to be equivalent
  • Direct experience with special needs children and/or behavioural challenges.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, mission and values.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and judgement when handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Proficient with computers and current technology.
  • Ability to withstand a physically demanding, active job.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a friendly, responsible, service-oriented attitude.
  • Effective organization and time management skills.
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Applicant will be responsible for their own transportation to and from program site(s).

 

WORK TIME FRAME: Approximately 14 weeks (May to End of August).

 

Remuneration Range: $18.74 - $22.78 per hour (2024 Rates), plus 4% vacation.

 

Any new hires will be required to obtain and submit a satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment, prior to their start date. Police Criminal Record Searches will only be requested for those eighteen (18) years of age or older.  Those selected for re-hire will not be required to attain a new police check; however, they will be required to sign a ‘Criminal Offence Self Declaration Form’ so long as no less than twelve (12) months have passed since their last day of work with the Corporation.
