POSITION SUMMARY:  

As a valued member of the nursing team, the Personal Support Worker, under the general direction of the Director of Care, and the technical direction of the Registered Nurse (RN)/Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Supervisor, demonstrates a commitment to the provision of safe, efficient care to the personal needs of residents by assisting them to meet their emotional, social, cultural, spiritual and physical needs, in accordance with established policy and procedure, respective of the Resident Bill of Rights and Long Term Care Homes Act. 

  

MAJOR TASKS: 

  • Provides personal care to residents in accordance with home policies, and established standard, Long Term Care Homes Act (LTCHA) and recognized nursing principles learned in the personal support worker program.
  • Encourages and assists with transporting residents as needed to support participation in activities to promote the optimum physical, social and emotional well being of each resident.
  • Observes and reports any changes in resident’s physical and emotional condition.
  • Provides individual attention to the needs of residents as directed by registered staff.
  • Participates in and demonstrates an understanding of resident safety principles and practices into all day-to-day activities.  Follows safe work practices and procedures and immediately communicates any activity or action which may constitute a risk to resident safety.
  • Takes responsibility for own ethical behaviour.
  • Performs with and communicates satisfactorily with staff and visitors with customer service being a focus at all times.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff members and mentors PSW students.
  • Takes advantage of learning opportunities both inside and outside the organization, and attends meetings as required.
  • Accountable for the completion of all assigned documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Personal Health Information & Protection Act. 
  • Has good knowledge of and complies with Fire and Evacuation Procedures within the Home, and all procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of the residents of the Home.

This position must take responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under The Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.  A worker must: 

  1. Work in compliance with the provisions of the Act, the regulations and City policies. 
  2. Must use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn. 
  3. Report to his or her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker. 
  4. Report to his or her supervisor any contravention of the Act, the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows. 

This position shall not:

  1. Remove or make ineffective any protective device required by regulations or by the City, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately. 
  2. Use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other worker. 
  3. Engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus a Personal Support Worker Certificate or equivalent as per Ontario Regulation 79/10 of the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007. 
  • Previous work experience with seniors or in a long term care facility. 

 CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of a police record check with vulnerable sector clearance. 
  • Satisfactory TB documentation.
  • Must meet all applicable provincial directives with respect to COVID-19 immunization/testing. 

 

Remuneration: $28.89 - 29.76 per hour (2024 rates).
