The Ottawa Citizen has an immediate opening for a hard-working and versatile general assignment reporter. The successful candidate will be a journalist with a passion for local news, strong editorial judgment, and the ability to perform under pressure. They will be adept in digital storytelling, interested in audience-engagement work and will strive to tell enterprise stories, even when covering breaking news.

What you’ll do:   

• Pitch ideas every day. Good ones, preferably 
• Be ready to cover all facets of Ottawa: breaking news, city politics, rural life, features, lifestyle, explainers, best-of-Ottawa stories, quick hits, audience callouts etc. 
• Learn something new every day.
• Develop relationships across Ottawa. 
• Work collaboratively with editors, photographers and digital producers to tell stories only the Ottawa Citizen can tell    

Who you are:  

• A journalist with a proven track record for writing clean, well-researched copy 
• A daily news reader, who can identify enterprise stories   
• Able to work under pressure and hit deadlines   
• An excellent communicator and collaborator 
• Well-versed in SEO best practices
• Enthusiastic about experimenting with new ways to tell stories that matter to our readers    

Qualifications:  

• A journalism degree or significant work experience 
• Experience working in a daily news environment 
• Demonstrated success in producing well-written, well-researched daily news stories 
• Experience with video or audio production, illustration and data visualization is an asset 
• Bilingualism is an asset 
• A valid G driver’s license
