Your responsabilities
This position is responsible for, both direct and indirect, provision of services to clients. As such, the incumbent requires the proven technical expertise to independently complete and certify large- and small-scale projects, work in cooperation with other technologists and engineers and work under the direction of a Project Manager. Work is generally not supervised in detail, with the amount of supervision being based on complexity of the proposed project or client requirements. Building Science projects generally include but are not limited to the following:
- Investigation of problems related to existing building envelope components including cladding, roofing, and windows.
- Conduct thermal and hygrothermal analysis of envelope enclosures.
- Working closely with our internal sustainability engineers to design building envelope solutions that maximize energy efficiency, minimize carbon emissions, and optimize cost-effectiveness.
- Design for rehabilitation/restoration or repair of existing building envelope components.
- Management of building system retrofits.
- Collaboration with architects on design review for the development of building enclosure details.
- Commissioning of building envelope components.
- Field review services.
- Construction administration.
- Completion of property condition assessments (pre-purchase and re-financing).
- Completion of building condition assessments.
- This position is operational in nature, reporting directly to a Project Manager in a supervisory role. Work will be assigned by the supervisor in terms of broad objectives to be accomplished and is reviewed by the supervisor for policy, soundness of approach, and general effectiveness.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Carries out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data, and adherence to established codes and standards and specifications.
- Regularly identifies problems and devises practical and economical solutions.
- May assist in the mentoring and training of junior staff.
- Assist senior staff in selected courses of action necessary to expedite the successful completion of assigned projects.
- Apply advanced engineering knowledge in planning and conducting projects having scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of difficult and responsible assignments.
- Prepare independent studies, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions verifying difficult, complex, or unusual matters.
Client Service Delivery
- Direct and indirect, delivery of services to clientele.
- Maintain expected level of client service delivery quality on projects.
- Follow departmental processes on all engagements for client deliverables.
- Perform tasks necessary to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and client requests.
Business Development
- Develop and maintain client relationships, identify new business opportunities.
- Respond to client requests in a timely fashion or defer to senior staff for resolution.
- Responsible for receiving and responding to requests for proposals with appropriate approvals from the Department Director.
- Develop an understanding of engineering business fundamentals.
- Develop an understanding of client business operations and objectives.
CORE DUTIES
- All duties listed below will be performed under the guidance of a Project Manager/Supervisor.
- Perform the building enclosure/envelope analysis and design, in accordance with the applicable Building Codes and Standards and utilizing hand calculations or computer aided design.
- Perform condition surveys, gather data, and prepare reports, drawings, and specifications under guidance of a Project Manager/Supervisor.
- Perform investigations required to diagnose specific problems and recommend repair.
- Perform property condition assessments and prepare reports with guidance from Project Manager/Supervisor.
- Prepare plans, calculations, and designs in accordance with established codes and standards.
- Assembly of drawings and specifications.
- Analysis and design for the construction of building envelope elements comprising a variety of materials.
- Preparation of standard drawings and sketches utilizing hand drafting techniques, and/or, CAD drafting software.
- Work in cooperation with CAD operators, utilizing drafting software, to develop accurate project drawings and sketches.
- Attendance at regular Departmental and Project Meetings with Senior Staff and Managers.
- Perform on-site field reviews of construction/renovation/rehabilitation projects to assess constructed element conformance, including the preparation of any associated field review reports.
- Prepare site instructions, change orders, progress draw approvals, and letters of certification.
- Participate in regular skills training and professional development including attendance at seminars and courses.
- Regularly review all material and building codes and standards (including all updates) to ensure accuracy of structural designs and analysis techniques and requirements.
- Complete all Human Resource Department documentation in a regular and timely manner.
- Regularly review the Corporate Health and Safety Policy.

- Achieved a diploma in building science or architectural technology.
- Knowledge of building construction and restoration processes and technical concepts.

- Knowledge of engineering business fundamentals
- Knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health & Safety requirements applicable to the position.
- 0 to 5 years of related experience.
- May have attained certification or training in specialized equipment and investigative tools.
- May have attained IIBEC certifications and/or BSSO Building Science Specialist (BSS) designation.
- May have attained Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) certification.
