Your responsabilities:

This position is responsible for, both direct and indirect, provision of services to clients. As such, the incumbent requires the proven technical expertise to independently complete and certify large- and small-scale projects, work in cooperation with other technologists and engineers and work under the direction of a Project Director. Work is generally not supervised in detail, with the amount of supervision being based on complexity of the proposed project or client requirements. Building Science projects generally include but are not limited to the following:

  • Investigation of problems related to existing building envelope components including cladding, roofing, and windows.
  • Conduct thermal and hygrothermal analysis of envelope enclosures.
  • Working closely with our internal sustainability engineers to design building envelope solutions that maximize energy efficiency, minimize carbon emissions, and optimize cost-effectiveness.
  • Design for rehabilitation/restoration or repair of existing building envelope components.
  • Management of building system retrofits.
  • Collaboration with architects on design for the development of building enclosure details.
  • Commissioning of building envelope components.
  • Field review services.
  • Construction administration.
  • Completion of property condition assessments (pre-purchase and re-financing).
  • Completion of building condition assessments.

This position is operational in nature, reporting directly to a Project Director, with supervisory responsibilities for junior and intermediate staff. While work is assigned by the Project Director, providing broad objectives to be accomplished, the person in this role will oversee and guide junior and intermediate staff, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and in accordance with project goals. The Project Director will review the work for policy adherence, soundness of approach, and overall effectiveness, while the individual in this position is responsible for mentoring and supervising staff to support successful project completion.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform technical tasks that require precision in calculations, comprehensive data gathering, and adherence to established codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Identify recurring problems and devise practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior staff, supporting their growth and development.
  • Assist the Project Director in planning and executing actions to ensure timely project completion.
  • Apply advanced engineering knowledge to independently plan and execute projects, coordinating complex and critical assignments.
  • Prepare independent studies, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions for complex or unusual issues.

Client Service Delivery

  • Directly and indirectly deliver high-quality services to clients, ensuring satisfaction.
  • Maintain and uphold the expected level of client service quality on all projects.
  • Adhere to departmental processes to ensure client deliverables are met with excellence.
  • Perform tasks to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and client requirements.

Business Development

  • Develop and maintain client relationships, identifying new business opportunities.
  • Respond promptly to client requests or escalate to senior staff for resolution.
  • Handle requests for proposals, securing necessary approvals from the Department Director.
  • Understand the fundamentals of engineering business operations and client objectives.

CORE DUTIES
All duties will be performed under the guidance of a Project Director, with the additional responsibility of supervising junior and intermediate staff:

  • Perform building enclosure/envelope analysis and design in line with applicable Building Codes and Standards, utilizing hand calculations or applicable programs.
  • Lead teams in conducting condition surveys, gather data, and prepare reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Investigate specific issues, diagnose problems, and recommend appropriate repairs.
  • Prepare plans, calculations, and designs in compliance with established codes and standards.
  • Assemble drawings and specifications for building projects.
  • Analysis and design for the construction of building envelope elements comprising a variety of materials.
  • Collaborate with CAD/Revit operators, using drafting software to create accurate project drawings.
  • Participate in regular departmental and project meetings with senior staff and managers.
  • Conduct on-site field reviews of construction, renovation, and rehabilitation projects to assess adherence to plans and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare site instructions, change orders, progress draw approvals, and certification letters.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through seminars and training courses.
  • Regularly review building codes and standards to ensure design and analysis techniques meet the latest requirements.
  • Complete HR documentation promptly and regularly.
  • Stay updated on the Corporate Health and Safety Policy, ensuring adherence to safety standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and guide junior and intermediate staff, ensuring their work aligns with project goals and meets quality standards.
  • Provide mentorship and training opportunities to foster professional growth among team members.
  • Ensure staff under supervision comply with operational standards, policies, and procedures, offering corrective guidance when necessary.
  • This role combines technical expertise, client interaction, and supervisory responsibilities, ensuring that all project deliverables are met with the highest quality and efficiency.

Your profile

  • Achieved a degree in civil, structural or architectural engineering with a strong focus on building science as relates to building envelope or enclosure.
  • Advanced knowledge of building construction and restoration processes and technical concepts.
  • Possess a balance of technical and communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering business fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to work within deadlines.
  • Strong commitment to professional and customer service excellence.
  • Adept at making observations and identifying problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.  French language skills considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of engineering business fundamentals
  • Knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health & Safety requirements applicable to the position.
  • 10+ years of related experience with a minimum of 5 years as a P.Eng.
  • Minimum of 3 years having supervisory experience.
  • May have attained certification or training in specialized equipment and investigative tools.
  • May have attained IIBEC certifications and/or BSSO Building Science Specialist (BSS) designation.
  • Has attained designation as a licenced professional engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario. 
  • May have attained designation as a licenced professional engineer in Quebec or other Canadian provinces.
