POSITION OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for, both directly and through the Vice-President the provision of services to clients in a lead role. As such, the incumbent requires the proven technical and management expertise to independently complete large- and small-scale projects, while also acting to lead/manage/certify projects in which other level Engineers, field personnel, and technicians perform the investigation, analysis, design, and detailing work. In addition, the incumbent is to provide direction and guidance to the project selected support staff on day-to-day project delivery and technical matters.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project Director and Lead Engineer selecting and managing project Engineering and technical staff to successfully complete assigned projects. Including:
- Project member selection (Engineering/CAD).
- Team billing and expenditure review.
- Scheduling of team tasks, goal setting, and overall project implementation strategies.
- Setting team and project expectations and communication protocols.
- Ensuring Corporate and Team objectives are in alignment.
- Project Design Engineer working in cooperation with project selected Engineering and technical staff to successfully complete assigned projects.
- Assist the Managing Director in the evaluation, selection, and training of staff.
- Participate in project & department specific short- and long-term planning.
- Make independent decisions on project work methods and procedures.
- Devise practical and economical solutions to project problems.
- Give technical guidance to Junior Engineers or technicians assigned to work on a common project.
- Take courses of action necessary to expedite the successful completion of assigned projects.
- Make responsible decisions on all matters assigned except those involving large sums of money or long-range objectives.
- Lead the members of a Design Team to successfully complete assigned or implied tasks.
Client Service Delivery
- Lead and manage the delivery of a portfolio of complex client engagements.
- Maintain expected level of client service delivery quality on projects.
- Follow departmental processes on all engagements to successfully deliver to the client and achieve targeted project profitability.
- Manage customer expectations and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
- Assist the Managing Director with the evaluation of Departmental financial elements (budgets, expenditures).
Business Development
- Develop and maintain client relationships, identify new business opportunities.
- Responsible for receiving and responding to requests for proposals with appropriate approvals from the Managing Director and Vice-President.
- Review and evaluate, in cooperation with the Managing Director and Vice President, new and emerging markets and methodologies. Work to assist in the development of strategic planning for the Department with the Managing Director and Vice President.
CORE DUTIES
- Serve as Senior Design Engineer and Project Manager across multiple projects. Work cooperatively with the Team staff to coordinate project delivery schedules, milestones, and staff workloads. Ensure delivery objectives are met.
- Perform the structural analysis and design of building members in accordance with the applicable Building Codes and Standards.
- Perform the analysis and design of structural elements utilizing hand calculation techniques and Computer Design Software including SAFE, ETABS, SCONC, EXCEL, SP-SLAB, Woodworks, and more.
- Perform the analysis and design of structural elements of a variety of materials including concrete, steel, masonry, light-gage metal, wood, and pre-cast.
- Preparation of accurate structural drawings and sketches utilizing hand drafting techniques, and/or, CAD drafting software (AutoCAD, REVIT Structures).
- Work in cooperation with CAD Operators, utilizing drafting software, to develop accurate project structural drawings and sketches.
- Attendance at regular Departmental and Project Meetings with Senior Staff and Managers.
- Perform on-site investigations as required to confirm existing site conditions and to perform associated project analysis and design functions.
- Perform on-site field reviews of construction/renovation/rehabilitation projects to assess constructed element conformance, including the preparation of any associated field review reports, site instructions, change orders, progress draw approvals, and letters of certification.

- Prepare clear and concise structural engineering reports and studies for clients and managers. Preparation of reports includes proper formatting and layouts in accordance with Departmental standards.
- Review, understand, and summarize project reports prepared by other consultants as required obtain applicable project information.
- Participate in regular skills training and professional development including attendance at seminars and courses.
- Regularly review all material and building codes and standards (including all updates) to ensure accuracy of structural designs and analysis techniques and requirements.
- Regularly review all Human Resource documentation in a timely manner.
- Regularly review the Corporate Health and Safety Policy as well as all supplement policies.
KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES
Formal Education
- Completed undergraduate degree in Structural (Civil) Engineering or Applied Sciences.
- Completion of Management based training programs including Fundamentals of Leadership, Leadership Skills, and Performance Management (or equivalent).
General Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of structural engineering processes and technical concepts including all applicable building codes and standards.
- Extensive project management & interpersonal skills and ability to deliver projects on time to the satisfaction of the customer.
- Extensive people management skills and ability to train/develop/engage staff members of all technical backgrounds and experiences.
- Proficient in dealing with clients of varying backgrounds and experiences.
- Proficient in conflict resolution, relationship building, and integrating of Company Strategic Goals with Team Strategic Goals.

Continuing Professional Development
- The Team member is required to meet Professional Development requirements as defined by their respective licensing and regulating body or a minimum of 15 hours over a 1-year period (whichever is greatest).
Experience
- Ideally 12 years of experience in the design/engineering/construction of full buildings and their components. Experience (and/or training) to include work in multistory construction and projects utilizing structural steel, cast-in-place concrete (flat slab & wall), and wood, including 4 years of Project Manager experience.
- Licensed Engineer under the Terms and Conditions of the Nova Scotia Professional Engineers.
