About the Role:

We are searching for a Head of Development, to join our Canada Executive Leadership Team.  

 

This role leads all aspects of Development, helping the brand to lead with the right franchisees, real estate assets and restaurant design that significantly contribute to the building of the Subway Brand image and footprint across Canada.

The scope of the role covers market planning, franchisee engagement, evaluation and selection, real estate site selection activity (including new sites and optimization of existing network), collaboration with Subway North America design teams, construction of new units and delivering on remodels targets.

 

This role will be responsible for developing strong processes and leveraging the scale of the North American Business Unit to increase speed to market and transforming the Development KPIs in Canada.

Having a strong pipeline for new store openings (including sites and franchisees), will be key. This role is integral in providing a national scope and alignment, with one voice towards the optimization of the network and development of new locations in the Canadian marketplace.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to....

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy - 25%

  • Build and execute strategic development plan for the optimization of Subway Canada restaurants (current and future) with a clear focus on Franchisee profitability.

    Works closely with Subway North America Development team to ensure consistency between US & Canada pertaining to design requirements, franchising updates, leasing updates and large partner relationships.

Leadership - 30%

  • Attracts, retains, and develops highly effective development professionals and support staff.
  • Holds team accountable for conducting business in a legal and ethical manner while complying with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations related to business and employment.
  • Oversees people, processes and programs across the team to ensure that talent is in place for current and future needs by providing operational, functional, and technical leadership.
  • Determines work methods and directs the work of associates. Drives the establishment of performance goals and provides on-going feedback, coaching, and development to enhance the team's performance and capability, to facilitate open communication, and to encourage continuous performance improvement.

Real Estate/Leasing - 15%

  • Lead and Liaise with Director, Real Estate & Leasing and Manager, Market Planning to build robust real estate pipeline for new restaurant growth.
  • Lead and Liaise with Director, Real Estate & Leasing and Manager Market Planning to create proactive plan for restaurant network optimization.
  • Be key contact for major landlords across Canada for portfolio optimization (including quarterly portfolio review)

Franchising - 15%

  • Lead and liaise with Director, Franchising for the identification, evaluation and selection of highly qualified new single and multi-unit franchisees across Canada.
  • Lead and liaise with Director, Franchising to proactively identify top existing multi-unit operators and establishment of roadmap for growth for these key partners.
  • Become the franchisor of choice in Canada.

Construction - 15 %

  • Lead and liaise with Sr Manager, Construction for the timely, accurate and on budget construction of all new units across Canada.
  • Lead and liaise with Sr Manager, Construction for the timely, accurate and on budget remodel of all required units across Canada.
  • Work closely with IPC partners to identify cost savings and value engineering opportunities for all new and existing locations across Canada to drive franchisee profitability

Skills & Capabilities:

  • A minimum of 10 years experience in Development
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Real Estate Market (leasing, renewals, municipal codes, contractors, etc) required 
  • Bachelors degree in business
  • PC knowledge with the ability to use the following software programs: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Excel, Access, Internet, Drop Box, Tableau, Project Manager etc.
  • Working knowledge of current industry sales management practices, approaches, tools, resources and skill sets vital to all aspects of Franchise Development.
  • A proven track record of demonstrated sales success in the franchise sales industry
  • Presentation skills and experience one-on-one, with small groups, and groups up to 1,000. Real Estate industry knowledge a plus
  • Ability to use persuasion to gain support and cooperation from audience (franchisee, store manager, co-worker) to achieve a desired course of action consistent with the organizations strategic goals and objectives.
  • High degree of detail orientation and ability to work within time constraints. Must have strong organizational skills, multi-tasking skills, possess attention to detail, and should be able to work in a fast paced environment. Must be able to adapt to different situations and personalities, while maintaining a degree of personal integrity, utilizing problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to work well independently to complete projects in a timely manner. Must also be able to be able to work well with others on team projects.
  • Travel to and attendance at select FWH and territory meetings/training programs may be required. Willingness to travel if/when necessary.

Actual pay is determined based on a number of job-related factors including skills, education, training, credentials, qualifications, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, performance, and working conditions.
